Need Help! Budget Rebuild!!! K, posted in the ie forum but i think this is more boost specific.... So I blew a headgasket, so I need to pull my heads no matter what. But I have an STS kit I plan on running, and my motor has 130k miles on it so I'm thinking that since I'm already pullin the heads, I might just pull the whole motor and freshen it up. Maybe not a whole 20 pound ready boost motor but something that will freshen up my tired engine and maybe let me run 8 pounds on the STS.
I have a $2k budget.... so how should I spend it? I don't really know how much stuff goes for as far as a rebuild, but can I get a rebuild, a new cam, and maybe just do some portwork and milling on my current heads for under 2 g's? That is assuming I do as much labor of it as possible? (i.e pretty much all labor except for the actual machine shop stuff)

You can get a little ways on 2 grand... getting a set of forged pistons, upgraded rods, even I-beams would be beneficial, a 02+ ls6 cam, a balance job, and machine work with you doing the labor other than honing... Just need to pull it apart and look at it, if its got a ton of wear, it'll need to be bored/honed. People run 8# of boost on a stock motor with meth injection, but wihle it's apart, might as well get it somewhat more bulletproof for forced induction. Good luck with your build.
ya I got a meth kit. at the very least I may just get some ls6 heads and run them until I have problems with the bottom end. its my daily driver car and I may just do a full on rebuild this winter but I can't afford to have it mia for too long right now. but the Ls6 heads are decent heads for boost for the price?

I agree.. if your gonna go into the motor, some decent rods, some forged low compression pistons, maybe some LQ9 truck heads with larger chambers to also help get the compression down, and soem minor machine work, balance and assembly with new bearings. if the cylinders mic out alright you may be able to get away with a Hone alone on the block but on a 130k mile motor I doubt thats gonna be an option. slip a mild cam in there and you should be good to go. that oughtta be enough for well more then 8 pounds of boost as long as you're getting fuel to it.

Verdad Gallardo I have a set of low mileage LS6 heads, I hear they're decent to run. And then I'll run a forged low compression bottom end. I'll run this as long as I can, a rebuild is inevitable (sp?)

Mahle pistons are nice pistons for the price, BUT the shelf pistons are made from 4032 alloy. every other fi piston out there is made of 2618 alloy. for those of us that are not pro tuners, 2618 will stand more uh oh's.

I have used this combo in a customers engine before(he brought us the parts), the pistons are a shelf Mahle piston and the rods are are a Hawks Racing rod, basically an Eagle sbc rod. Actually not a bad setup, I would not hit it with a lot of boost or N2O, but over all nice parts.
