Figured I'd post this up. I saw it on the pages of HotRod this morning, googled it, and

Enjoy.

I haven't read up on it yet, but from the HotRod blurb, this kit plane looks to be pretty hot and I'd imagine that he's looking to fly it @ Reno in the Sport Plane class.

A few years ago, there was a company called Thunder Mustang (and American Air Racing) that were selling full on 3/4 scale Mustangs using a V-12 that was being built by Falcomer (sp?) Industries. The blurb in HotRod (about the linked plane) said only about 310 hp @ altitude (service ceiling of 30,000ft). Also, it said about a 6000ft per min rate of climb, WHICH IS DANG GOOD!!! Sucker only weights in about 1800 lbs, dry.

Ok, in some of the pictures it looks Turbo'ed. I'm sure it has more HP than 400. I was also thinking that it might just be for altitude pressures. Not sure.

Yes...that's correct, it uses the turbo to get back to "atmosphere" at sea level while @ it's service ceiling. You don't make near the power up @ 30k feet that you do @ 0 feet even with boost. I'd say probably the main problem is the reduction gearbox for the prop. That's probably the weak link for power.

How about a gyrocopter. The Autoshop has been building a 427 C5R for one for years. It is under development for the military. They started out with a turbo and found they could reach there goals w/o it. http://www.cartercopters.com/

I saw this plane briefly in Oshkosh in 2005. It is absolutely beautiful. The guy that is building it is an Indy car designer or somthing along those lines. The construction is unlike anything Ive ever seen, it seems that the only thing that is not carbon fiber is the engine and related parts. But heres some other pictures that i took while i was there, i was kind of rushed so i didnt get a whole lot, not to mention the hordes of people surrounding the plane.

All they really need to do for a killer sport plane racer is intercool it, forge the motor, beef up the gearbox, and it would be stout!!! I swear, if I win the lotto...I'd be going to flight school and buying one of these.

BTW, have any more of the air frame?
