Default Forced Induction and Electric Water Pump

Hey guys.... So i was driving home from work today and all of a sudden my car starts smokin real bad... I pull over and take a look at it and im about 99 percent positive that my water pump busted cause it has been kinda leakin for a while. Anyhow, Im going to be goin with a turbo setup eventually and i heard from someone that an electric water pump was not a good idea when goin with a turbo. I really want to upgrade to one but i dont wanna waste money if it wont be compatible with a turbo setup. Plz let me know asap cause im tryin to order it today. Thanks alot.

One reason to avoid too much electrical stuff is you dont wanna bog your alternator. When doing so, you risk losing voltage to things like the oil pump and fuel pump and in that event you can experience less flow (which is crutial during WOT)

They're referring to the turbo scavenge pump(s).

I don't think an electric waterpump is a particularly good idea for a forced induction street car because they won't pressurize the heads like a mechanical and that can lead to air bubbles and hot spots. This can create an opportunity for detonation.

System water pressure is different than the pressure you see at the cap.

Just food for thought.

I've run them on turbo and supercharged cars without a problem. Temps are a little lower and horsepower is a little higher.

I have one sitting in my garage waiting for my new motor. I plan on running it after hearing of some heat issues one of my buddies had.

Either way good luck with it man.

I heard if you are running a bigger turbo setup where temps will get higher, you wont wanna run it, cause it can only flow enough up to 4k rpms, and then after that your superheating the coolant.

I think it only applies to a street car though, as you will be driving it more often then just the drag strip, and for a longer time.

i dont want to give out bad info, but look at the flow rates of them vs stock, the stock pump flows more which will move heat away from the heads faster at high rpms

i think its something like 50GPM vs 80

From my research I thought the EWP ran at an equiverlent to the manchanical one at 4500 engine rpms.

So street and drag use is good, becuase you'll spend more time below 4500rpm than above it. More efficent cooling and more HP. And yeah although your at WOT down the 1/4 mile its not for longer enough to over heat.

Circuit racing and high speed stuff like the Silver State Classic you are likely to spend much greater amounts of time above 4500rpm. So in this instance the EWP would be very unefficent and run the risk of higher coolant temps and even over heating and certainly low HP under such conditions.

So I think they are either REALLY good or REALLY bad depending on use.
