Default sts kit questions

I tried finding some answers under the searches but I couldn't find some.
1. With the basic kit can you run both 5 and 7 psi with it?
2. If I run over 5 pounds do I need an intercooler or methanol injection?
3. What do people recomend, intercooler or meth anol? and if Methanol where can I find some and where can I get it refilled in MN?

Thanks in advance guys. The guys at sts didn't feel liek answering phone calls today or I would have asked them.

With a boost controller, I think you can run pretty much any boost you want within limits. It is a very good idea to run at least an intercooler. Usually methanol injection is done with intercooling to reduce the chances of detonation, meaning you can run more timing.

to run 7 psi, i would def recommend the intercooler. i run 7.5 but i have the fmic and the supporting fuel system. if you wanna throw meth in there than have at it. i've seen several camaros with my set-up with meth make 500+

I wouldn't go any higher than 5 psi without meth or an intercooler. You'll find little gain with the higher air temps and the reduced timing needed. Plus you'll risk blowing you're engine.
I've got both, but if you have to choose one, go with the intercooler. It's always on, it never runs out or fails, and later down the road if/when you decide to forge the motor and lower the compression you'll want to get rid of the meth anyways because it's unneeded.

I had 380 RWHP at 5psi no intercooler. I install the intercooler and at 4.5 psi I'm at 430 RWHP.

i agree 100% with buck, the intercooler will always stay there. just opt and spend a little more for it and it'll always be there and help. plus it looks cool

Ok, one more question, should I buy the intercooler with the turbo kit from sts or is there a better place to buy that from?

This is just speculation, but I would think that STS has done their homework with the intercooler and their own system. Also I remember that TRT had a setup of their own... I think. I personally had mine custom made by a local shop (JL Turbo). They charged me about $1050 installed.

The one from TRT is more than enough. Have one on my car. Lowered IAT's by around 45 degrees.

I run 5/8 with mine, no intercooler, no problems.
The general rule of thumb is 8 psi needs an intercooler.
My theory is that the charge pipe from the turbo to the intake cools the air slightly, allowing the higher boost.
Since cutting off the nose of my Formula is not an option, this is all I will do.
Plus, I gain 80+ hp at the higher boost, so it is certainly worth it.

The STS sold intercooler was not developed by them; it was an external company. FWIIW. If you want one, buy the TRT one. They at least answer their phones.
STS has always been poor (very poor) at answering phone calls, it may never change. Too bad for them.

(www.trtturbo.com) sponser list --->. A custom tune is always better than a mail order tune, and I read a magizine article where they still had to have their ss custom tuned because the nelson one wasn't running right.

I am very excited to get a turbo kit in. I am just trying to get all the details before i have the money to do it all. I am working 87 hours this week to try to get a good start on saving some for the turbo.
