Removing chrome for ceramic coating?
Removing chrome for ceramic coating? I have a set of gibson truck headers that were chrome plated. Im using them for a front mounted turbo setup. I would like to get everything ceramic coated.
Im assuming they cant coat over the chrome, so what is my best bet for removing the chrome?

You'll be bead blasting for years. 
You could coat over the chrome, but the adhesion of the coating would be limited to the adhesion of the chrome, which in a turbo application would be limited. Coating the inside of the pipe would help it some, but not much IMO.
The chrome can be blasted off with aluminum oxide at a high PSI (100+) but it is still going to take a while, and probably thin the steel beneath it. Do you have to use those headers? If there's an alternative, or if you can get those headers plain steel, your best bet is to sell those and buy another set.
You could wrap them, but the wrap will hold in the heat and the chrome will all flake off, leaving you with a mess underneath.

thanks whistler, I actually traded a set of brand new truck shorties for a few exhaust parts. Im using them for my turbo build, and would not like to part with them. The setup is already built. I was going to use wrap on them, but would rather use some nice coating. would you reccomend coating the chrome?
