Default forged motor

I was curious on how many people have actually built/assembled their own engines. Is it cost efficient to do this or is it just better to not take the chance with this costly equipment and go ahead and have a builder do it for example (lme ect). I would like to do a 402/408 but I like the price of a forged rod/piston and stock crank combo of a 346 for a new gen tt kit from Martin. I'm by no means a top engine builder but I have dabbled in a lot of things in regards to mechanical knowledge. I have done cam swaps ect on my 02 so I do know my way around the car so to speak. What did it cost ya to do a forged 346 with stock crank. thanks for the input guys

im been in this delema for a while i chose just to have the block completly machined and have the pistons rods ring and crank and bearing installed balanced and blueprinted. most of us don't have the equipment nessecary to do these essential things however im putting the rest of the short block and motor together myself save the rear main seal cuase u need a special tool to install it and it costs alot of money. installing the cam, timing chain, oilpump, oilpan, windage tray, front cover and crank pulley should save me between 6-700 dolars and take me hopefully only a few days to put together.

Did you guys find it hard to get within tolerances? How about file fitting rings? If you could give me some real world info on your experiences that would help. Thanks guys. Sincerely Chris

you'll have better luck getting the responses you are looking for in the internal engine sections...
