A FEW TURBO ?'s
I figured I'd ask you guys because this is the best LS1 site around.
First of all I'm a soldier over in Iraq right now and I'm getting an
LS1 TA as SOON as I get back. I got a hold of a brand new Holset HT80
turbo yesterday and I'm trying to get some info on making it work in a
TA. It came off of a Cummins 903 diesel engine that's used in the
Bradley M2/A2. My MOS is a Bradley mechanic(63M) and this turbo came
in out of nowhere. I guess the guys that just left ordered it. Anyway,
I thought it would make a cool budget turbo build if I could somehow
make this thing work in a TA. I know that the exhaust/compressor
housing won't work because it's HUGE and it's heavy as hell(iron I
think). I was just wondering if you think I could get it rebuilt when
I get home and save some money/make a cool turbo story? Would it be
cheaper to use this turbo or just scrap it and buy an aftermarket
kit?
I know the compressor wheels are different for diff. applications, so
do you think this could even work?

You can get decent turbos for $500-700 thatll last you the life of the car. Masterpower are decent and of course theres plenty of options from the sponsors to the right. If you dont know the history of the unit you could end up spending more money (and more headaches) than if you just bought a new or slightly used turbo. Because if it fails you might have to switch flanges, pipes, and of course rebuild/find a new one. Check into reverse 6.0L truck headers or if you can weld then check out some of the DIY manifolds around here.
And you can also do a rear mount if you find that easier. Its all about what your goals are....A/C? Relocation? Fabbing? ect.
