There is a screw in water jacket core plug right in front of the mount.

I would pressurize the radiator and see whats going on, if you drove it home its hard to believe that it would just pour out on the dyno and not on the way home if a head gasket was leaking that bad. But who knows, only one way to find out whats wrong.

Damn someone beat me to it. I was gonna say there is a plug there. I think there is 3, 2 of them on that side alone in front of the mount and one after the plug. I just did mine and looked at my GM manuals to verify it. Go under the car on the driver side pull the Alternator and look up in there. If your lucky maybe its just a loose plug.

I feel your pain. I been through 3 Rebuilds (and 2 blocks) since I started on mine. First was a rebuild for new rings, then I had major problems with oil consumption, after that was all fixed with new pistons, the oil pump went out and I had to replace the block. I am actually tired of the F/I **** myself. My car has been a project since I had it start in Iraq over a year ago. Now its running great, but I am so spent I lost the love of driving it.

Thanks guys. And thanks for the pictures BadMonkey- I'll look at those locations, but I think it is coming from a little further back than those diagrams show...

Well, I think I found the problem. Or at least one of the problems... That big freeze plug in front of the motor mount is definitely leaking. I pressurized the coolant system today and was looking all around to find leaks, but I never did see anything dripping from anywhere. I did however find some major stainage right under the freeze plug near the front motor mount. I was going to see if I could tighten it, but I don't have a hex socket nearly big enough to fit that plug. Anyone have any idea where I could get a socket like that?

Here is the best picture I could take of it.

You can definitely see where there has been coolant leaking by the stains in the block under the plug! Hopefully this is the ONLY problem, but I'm not holding my breathe

Hope it is just a freeze plug.

Its a 17mm hex, good luck finding one, but here is a 2.00 hardware store solution.

If you reused an old plug it can leak, new they have a teflon or something similar washer bonded to it to seal them.

Well, I ordered the whole shortblock from SDPC, so I would assume everything is (or was) new 4000 miles ago. I thought about putting something together like that, but figured I'd see if anyone knew of a place to get the correct tool. But thanks for telling me the size KP That option will be plan B if I can't find the hex socket tomorrow.

Any automotive machine shop should have it. When we had to replace a freeze plug on my LS1 block a couple of years ago, I searched a lot of hardware stores and asked a bunch of people, but the first machine shop I went to had it.

I found a 17mm hex socket at a local wholesale store yesterday, so last night I tightened up the freeze plug. It was actually already very tight. I had to put a lot of effort into turning it like maybe 10° at most. So does that mean that the freeze plug needs to be replaced? How do those things work? Aren’t they designed to fail under certain circumstances?

Either replace it with a new one or pull the old one completely out. Once out wrap it with a little teflon tape and coat it with silicone. Should not have a problem after that.

If thats the problem that is sweet, easy fix and you will be a giddy like a lil school girl again! Keep at it, you'll get it figured and will be well worth it once you are back bigger and far better
