Default 370 or 402

my goal is 650-700 rwhp. in the low 500s now. have a 6.0 block available in great condition as well as 2 sets of 317 heads. i will be buying forged pistons/rings/rods with ARP bolts no matter the choice. do i need to stroke it to reliably get to the level i want? i assume i can raise the boost up a bit, 13-15 psi maybe. planning on staying around mid 9s to 1 for compression. be nice not to need to spend money on a forged stroker crank. also, does the 6.0 block need to be clearanced for a stroker crank?

Your goal can be had with 370. Some people have done it. Search in this forum, you will find it.

If you have funds, 402 or 408 will be great fun.

If you do a search on here under boosted lists you can pull up the old boosted lists which list hp, times, mods. You will find many people that have gone very quickly with every combo...forged 346,370..402,408..the forged iron blocks are very strong. Thats why I went with one. LSX block is better but really for hardcore well over 1000 rwhp builds.

370 stock cranks are very strong as well so you can get buy with just forged pistons and rods..ARP mains studs are good idea ,assuming also good rod bolts.

408 and 402 will have some advantages..more power off boost, more torque off boost. More torque and hp on boost or you can run lower boost level with the bigger engine and make the same power as with smaller engine . Now less boost can help head gaskets stay on the heads. That can be a good thing too.

On the negative side its going to cost more for that 402 or 408. You do need the crank and are going to be spending more money for the build.

I originally was hot and bothered to go 427..just love the sound of that number! LOL But then came to my senses and realized that the 408 is more than enough . Some are saying the normal aps kit is too small anyway for a 408 but have seen guy on here running 9s at near 140mph so if that is too small well whatever its more than fast enough for me and that was at like 12psi but on a 402 with all the mods.

I am shooting for 800 to 850rwhp with my 408 combo. If fall a bit short than will likely just add some spray on top. Have a zex kit anyway that can use.
For your goals 370 will do it easily. 346 forged up would do it too. You have to decide.

Hopefully will have a better update of my 408 in a few weeks. Going to try my best to get my new engine and turbos in my car before the season ends up here. We put our cars away by nov 1 latest most years.

ya - i see 370s (and 347s) have been used but i want to reach that power level reliably (and easily?) and not have to push the engine to its limits (assuming i would - thus the question). and saving a 1k on a forged crank is nice. just don't want to kick myself for not doing it up front. i got the cash, but don't want to spend it if i don't need to. i'll keep searching and reading. thanks.

Oops..forgot you have the aps kit too...I should read more closely.
Well if you wait a bit longer you should see how the 408 works out for me.
I won't be getting any track times this year though maybe some dyno numbers. I want a new rear end before trying the track. Also will be switching out to a 4l80 next season just bought a brand new auto top console piece off ebay! The tex twin might do the job but I am sick of standards. A nice stall is just what I want. And as said you already know the numbers JM got with his 4l80e and his aps twins on his 402.The guy MY HERO!

408 was a bit overkill but I am an overkill kind of guy.Debating going up to bigger snails still but the smaller normal ones will give a better powerband for the street I think. For track well the bigger ones would be better but really I have no desire to go 8s. I don't even think will be putting in a rollbar and they kick you off at 11.5 at our local NHRA track and you need a medical and liscence at 9.99..So after my car goes faster than 11.5 its racing days are most likely over. Although we do have a few sort of outlaw tracks so might to see what it can really do there.
