Default Octane and Compression ???

Ok, so people have sat back and asked what octane to run multiple times. I know that running higher is better, I don't run under 91 on ANY vehicle I own. Here's my question. How does octane directly relate under compression? How does compression requier a higher octane gas? And why does a lower octane cause possible pinging/detonation under a higher load/higher temps?? TIA.

Actually, you want to run the lowest octane gas you can without getting KR in ANY car. Most people have no understanding of octane ratings and automatically think running higher octane gas will improve performance; this is a myth.

Octane ratings measure a gasoline's ability to resist engine knock, a rattling or pinging sound that results from premature ignition of the compressed fuel-air mixture in one or more cylinders. Running higher octane does not buy you added performance unless you are getting knocking/detonation.

As you run higher compression, the air heats up more (air heats as its compressed) and you are more likely to get premature ignition (due to the heat igniting the fuel). Also, in summer, cars ping more because the air temp is already higher to begin with. Higher Octane gas doesn't ignite as easily so you can run higher compression. But because higher octane gas doesn't ignite as easily, on a normal car (rated to run on 87 octane), it doesn't burn as efficiently/completely which is why you really shouldn't run it when it isn't necessary.

Miner, thanks that cleared things up for me. I appreciate it. And yea.....the reason I only run the higher octane on ls1's due to the fact they were designed for it(or just prefer it, I can't tell). I'm also in texas, so since it rarely gets cooler out except for maybe four or five months out of the year, I just stick with 91 in my Durango anyhow. It seems to like it just fine. LOL.

You could technically get more power from more octane if you werent getting any KR, you could bump up timing a few degrees and still not have any KR.
