Differences between 1998 and 1993 - 1997 gas tanks

From a swapping in 98 or newer sending unit or fuel pump, what are the reasons why a 93-97 fuel tank won't work or needs modification?

93-97 has different wiring & a different resistance for the level sensor.

So the metal 98 tank has the older style pump mount, but different wiring & a different resistance for the level sensor from the plastic 99+ tanks?
