It's always best to sump the tank but you can use a pickup tube. If you use a pickup tube you must follow these guide lines:

1. Use a 5/8" pickup tube
2. Mount the pump level or lower than the bottom of the tank.
3. Maintain at least 1/2 tank of fuel at all times.
4. Install a check valve on the outlet of the pump to prevent drain back.
5. 12304 fuel filter on the suction side of the pump.
6. 10AN line from the pickup tube to the fuel pump.

Using the above guide lines will ensure your pump will live a long happy life.

Or run a good quality replacement Race tank.

Can the 5/8" pickup tube be attached to the factory fittings on a factory sending unit, or does that become too much of a restriction?

Most of the time people just drill a hole in the factory top plate and put in a 10AN bulk head fitting. Then just bend and flare a pickup tube. This is the easiest way to do it.
