So far people have told me it could be a leak in the sender line or a leaking "O ring" somewhere. I'm guessing the O ring would be in the sender line. The only fixes that have been recommended so far are to fix the leak(duh) or install a check valve. Its all very vague as I am completely new to this area of the car. It would really help to start to understand if I could get the damn pump out of the tank.

Round 2 of fitting a square peg through a round hole is today after work.

Thanks for you help. I found a notch in the rim of the tank opening that allows for a small screw driver to pry the edge of the bucket inward and you pull upward. You have to pry then slide the screw driver around the edge. I took a few tries but I got it.
