fuel pressure gauge HELP?!

fuel pressure gauge HELP?! Just hooked up a used autometer fuel pressure gauge and when you start the car the pressure somtimes reads all over the place and somtimes its ok. or it just pegs the gauge needle out.... actual fuel pressure was verified, so what could be causing this maybe a bad sender?
