Help!! 42 vs 28# injectors

Default Help!! 42 vs 28# injectors

I have a 98 SS cammed, heads, intake, tuned, and more. It's tuned with the stock 28#s rigtht now (@ 94% duty). I have a friend trading a 98 SS tuned with 42's and pretty much the same engine mods otherwise. He's trading his car in tomorrow so we plan on swaping injectors first.

Any idea if his car being tuned for 42s would make a 3 hour drive with the 28s to the dealer? Also would my car be ok running on the 42s until I have the tune updated? - I rarely drive it anyway (maybe 100 miles a month). I just like to get it out and beat on it every once in a while.

Needs tune.

You might be safe in closed loop. It will certainly be rich. I would be a bit more worried about him though. Stay out of PE if you plan on doing this.

why not just get there early and swap the injectors and not take a chance.

We really just need to get his to the lot. My car really wont be an issue since I don't have to drive it and can be trailored to the shop for tuning.

This is also a worst case, the ideal plan is to pull mine tonight and let him swap them out over there tomorrow.

Since the cars are the same year, can you swap out the injectors & the ECM's? You could do this anytime in advance, and it would allow you time to drive each car beforehand so that each ECM could relearn.
Vats should still work on both cars since it is a function of the BCM, which would remain in each car, as is.
Edit: I've just read that your friend is driving to the dealer today.

Well, looks like I'll just buy new injectors instead.

The lot wouldn't give anything for his SS so he bought the truck and will keep the car till it sells.

unbolt your fuel rail with injectors attached and let him do the swap a block away from the dealer. it pointess taking both cars. its only 4 bolts, cant take more then 15mins to swap

I have a set of New Lucas 42lbers at the shop. Would be easy to swap them in before we tune it.

the problem is if you install injectors that are not programmed in your car already, such as the Injector Flow Rate table (IFR) and you run it, there is no safe way to do that as it will either run really lean or really rich depending on which injectors you install

That's correct. Which is why I suggested swapping the ECMs. They're both 98 cars.

Are those lucas injectors just drop in or will I need adapters or anything special?

They fit directly.

He is correct. They are drop-in. So we could swap them on the dyno just prior to tuning.
