Default pump problems.

I just put a new pump in my wifes car because I thought the other one was dead but now Im wondering if its the pump. The car will idle but is a little rough and if i go to rev it,It will rev with very light throttle but if I try to give it more then a 1/4 throttle it just fall on its face.
I disconnected the fuel line at the filter and put the line in a gallon jug and when you turn the key on it just sprays a little and then stops. Isn't the pump supposed to stay running if there is no load on it?
Any ideas?
Thanks
JL

No, it's not. Unless the pcm sees rpm signal, the pump will just go thru the prime cycle, [what you saw], and shut off.

Get a pressure gauge on the fuel rail & let us know what the pressure is under both conditions. This will determine if the fuel system is at fault.
