Default 1998 Fuel Pressure Regulator Problem almost fixed.

Background: Car has had long crank times, and lean A/F ratio at high RPM's. I replaced the FPR 6 times, not realizing that it was the plastic receptacle that the FPR sits in getting out of round and breaking the seal, not the FPR itself that was going bad. Then replaced the assembly about 1 year ago. It went bad again. So I'm trying this. If anyone has a better Idea how to fix this, or knows where I can find a GM engineer to get revenge on for the 10+ times I've had to take the pump out, let me know.

Here you can see the oblong shape that seems to cause the fuel pressure leakage. You can also see I sanded off the tabs on the side.

Ran a hose clamp around the FPR, to try to keep it round, and hold in the FPR. Re-installed, and the car ran, but A/F ratio was 15.7 on start up, once it warmed up the LT fuel trim came up to 9-10 and brought the a/f to 14.7. At this point I noticed fuel spraying up ward out of the tank. FPR was still leaking.

FPR had popped out slightly, so I added an extra o-ring, and added another hose clamp oriented 90* to the original one holding the fpr in its bucket. Started the car and the A/F went to 10.5. Pulled the pump up slightly with the car running, and it still has a very slight leak.

I updated the original post, and after a week of driving the car. It still has the long crank times, unless you turn the key on twice before starting it. So fuel is still leaking slowly past the regulator, But... the fuel trims are all -1 to +4, and it maintains A/F at 11.7 or so all the way to 6100RPM with a highest injector duty cycle of 88%.

So the car is driveable, but I'd still like to find a more permanent solution to cure the long crank times.

Someone else has to of come across this and found a better solution.

Looking for a fix myself. I tried a zip tie to hold it tight, worked great for about 300 miles, then it came loose again.

I found an old post where Lonnie s performance said he had a fix, so I called him and he said he no longer has access to the part he was using to make the fix. He recommended using a C5 fuel filter / pressure regulator. Not a direct fit fix, but that's what I plan to try.

Eliminate the in tank FPR. Add a FPR at the fuel rail.

Here is what I did. Hope mine holds up okay. I have 60lbs of fuel pressure at idle so must be working now.
