Default 98 Fuel Pump Swap....PROBLEMS!!!!

Okay, i am in the middle of swapping out my stocker for a walbro 255 pump. All of the info i am finding on installing shows a "bucket" for the assembly for the pump to go in to. Mine looks nothing like this. Mine just has the pump installed into holding "rings" top and bottom and goes into the bracket for the assembly. Every write up i have found shows a bucket in there..... Why is mine different?

I do not see how the pump will even go into this assembly the way it is right now. Dont know what to do to make this happen. Any info would be helpful at this point!!

Thanks

there is no bucket because you have no bucket on the 98's. what you will have to do is get some hose clamps and secure the pump to the braket like that. The pump will not fit in the yellow things you factory pump sets in. also you will have to splice your wires as the harness will not fit..its really easy. two wires..i just used butt splices..dont use any heat shrink!!!! also make sure you use some sort of rubber between the pump and the braket you are securing it to becuase if you dont it will rattle and make all kinds of noise!! here is a picture of the assembly..(this is not mine, someone elses' i got for reference off the board a while back) its for a dual pump assembly but it'll help you out. youll just have one pump instead of two..

OKay, so the key points in doing all this is to attach the pump to the bracket using stainless hose clamps big enough, and also putting a piece of rubber between the pump and the bracket? After that...splice the wires using NO heat shrink? Why no heat shrink? I planned on using a posi-lock electrical connector for the splicing....is this okay?

Do i use the yellow brackets from the stock pump at all then? TO me it sounds like they are discarded?

Also, with clamping the pump to the bracket.......do i need to keep the pump perpendicular to the bottom?

yes you got it. no heat shrink becuase the gas will dissolve it. they make some that is supposed to be gas tolerant but i wouldnt trust it. yes the factory ends are not used because the walbro wont fit, just keep them someonewhere in case you need them later.. i see nothing wrong with using the posi locks. also make sure you get some high pressure fuel injection line. the piece that comes with the kit is kinda weak..also make sure that the hose is secured good..i used to hose clamps on each connection..dont want to have to pull it again. just secure your return line to the assembly as your walbro filter wont have a boss for it. yes you need to keep the pump as straight as you can but the way it sits will be a hair crooked but dont worry about it.

So, you are saying the 5/16 hose that came with the install kit is no good then? I guess i don't see the difference from that to any other hose.....unless like you said it is a pressure issue.

Only thing i was curious about that is left is the return line like you said. Would i be okay to use some plastic zip-ties to hold the hose to the assembly? Are they gas tolerant?

Thanks for helping me out on this......i thought i was going to have to go the expensive route there for a while and buy a racetronics setup!!

sorry i didnt respond to this earlier, i had to leave and forgot about the thread..i just put my return line under the hose clamp when i tigtend the pump down, that hose is stouter than you think..i cant verify the info on the hose, but when doing my swap EVERYONE advised me to get new hose so i was just passing it along..hell its only a foot of hose,it was worth it to me not to have to worry about it.
