Default filters?

I am curious - what is the point of a fuel filter after the fuel pump?
Almost if not all in tank pumps have a sock type filter on the end of the pump or pump pickup.
Inline filters rarely have a micron count that would capture anything that got by the in tank filter.
I suspect the in tank filter would plug up long before the inline filter?
What am I missing?


If the inline filter is mandatory - what minimum micron rating should it be ?

The filter after the pump is a MUCH finer "screen" or media of about 10 micron, IIRC, to protect the fuel injectors. You better believe it IS needed.

so what micron count should I be looking for?
I see filters with wildly different micron counts

Ask your injector supplier/manufacturer.

The first filter should be 100 microns, and that protects the pump. The second filter is 10 microns, and that protects the injectors.

You can't put a 10 micron filter before the pump because it creates too much restriction, and the pump can't draw through it. Electric pumps don't suck.

Also, every once in a while, the pump will have a catastrophic failure, and dump shrapnel into the fuel line, so you need a filter to keep that stuff out of the rest of the fuel system.

I'd hope the pump would never fail and do that !!! Use better pumps lol.
