Fuel Pump WEIRD Electrical Problem
I had a shop replace the old fuel pump. That's $1000.
Only 500 miles later, but, unfortunately, 4 years later (yes, the car sits quite a bit), pump is dead. ...or is it?
List of symptoms:
If I connect the fuel pump to the fuel pump electrical connector, it does not run. ...Not even for 4 seconds.
Voltmeter on Black (-) and Grey (+) wires at fuel pump connector gives me 12 volts for about 4 seconds when I turn the ignition ON.
Voltmeter reads zero when I turn the ignition ON if I remove either the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump fuse.
The pump runs when external 12vdc is applied to the Black (-) and Grey (+) terminals on the pump.
If I install leads between the pump and the connector so that I can read voltage while the pump is energized externally, the pump runs and the voltmeter reads 12.
If I install leads between the pump and the connector so that I can read voltage while the pump is energized from the connector (ignition ON), the pump will not run AND the voltmeter reads zero. If I then disconnect the pump, the voltmeter reads 12.
I am not a very good electrical guy, but come on... what gives?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-J
PS - car runs on carb cleaner
The cutters are just there to keep my wires in place.
