Default Quick question for my 98 trans am

Evening guys I just bought a new hanger assembly part number mu2436 off rock auto since my gas gauge stopped working…. I am running the racetronix pump and my question is I’m assuming this is a newer design hanger because the 4pin connector is different from what’s on the racetronix harness… anyone familiar with this and if it can work with repinning wires to the connector that is for the assembly? Any help appreciated

thanks

I have a 98 Z28 and replaced the pump and harness with a Racetronix dual pump kit and Racetronix dual pump harness.

Previous to the dual pump harness I had the 98 Racetronix upgraded single fuel pump kit with upgraded harness. It was the early version of the kit (2005 or so) and it did NOT require me to replace the pump feed harness with a modular yellow bulkhead connector. See pics in link below of the Racetronix yellow modular bulkhead connetor..

One the other hand, the dual pump harness did. I had to replace the stock pump one piece harness with a modular bulkhead connector. The Racetronix intermediate pump harness is configured with a female plug end that plugs into the connector.

You have some options to adapt your harness to the RockAuto bulkhead connector on their fuel hat assembly.

The question to answer is if the RockAuto bulkhead connector has the same form factor as the 98 version of the Racetronix bulkhead connector? If it does then remove it and replace it with the Racetronix connector ($10)? See pics in link below of the connector.

https://www.racetronix.biz/p/fs-bulk...y-4-way/bca-4w

If it can't be replaced because of the configuration of the RockAuto connector and size hole in the hat of the assembly then IMO you will have the change the plug end of the Racetronix harness to fit to the RockAuto connector using the add ons shown in the link above. Scroll down in the link to see the add ons.

Even so you might also have to determine if the Racetronix harness uses two of pins on the vapor side power to the pump or one for power and the other for ground. I don't recall if their instructions back then (2005) changed the ground to a different source for contact.

On my 98 Racetronix dual pump harness, for example, the harness uses two of the blades (pins) for power and connects the negative wire from the pump to a ground on the metal assembly hat. The stock 98 harness and yellow plug, on the other, used one pin for positive and one pin for ground with the remaining two pins for the fuel sender compared to the Racetronix harness that uses two of pins to power dual pumps.

The reason being that one pin can only handle 14 amps. With dual pumps more than 14 amps are required, so Racetronix uses two pins instead of one pin.

We don't know how the RockAuto version wired the pump using their version of the bulkhead connector.

You will have to determine how RockAuto configured their upgraded harness with respect to how it runs power through the connector on the atmosphere side and also on the vapor side to the pump(S). Does it use just one pin or two for the single pump? Same for the your Racetronix harness?

Once you learn that, then IMO it's just a matter of either switching to the Racetronix connector if possible and/or replace the plug end with the connectors shown in the link above. It's not too difficult to replace the female ends in the female connector plug (using a paper clip or very small special purpose built screw driver). The important thing is too NOT bend the tang on the connector so when you reinsert so it snaps and locks into place in the female plug end. Else it will push back when attached to the male end pin.

There are four terminals on the yellow bulkhead connector show in link above. Each terminal is rated at 14 amps (150). The terminals are labeled B,C,D, and E.

B–top right
C – bottom right
D – top left
E – bottom left

In a pic shown below is the stock atmosphere side one piece pump harness with the yellow bulkhead connector attached to harness. On this harness there are four male terminals on the plug end. When attached to the hat of the assembly the male pins are exposed on the vapor side of the tank. The pins positions are the same - B,C,D, and E. On the opposite end of this harness are female plug ends. The female ends of the stock pump harness are reconfigured when adapted to connect to the Racetronix harness. See link below.

http://www.racetronix.com/product/RX.../Dcp_1169a.jpg

Inside the tank is the stock pump harness. On this harness the female ends on the harness attach to the male pins of the yellow connector. The two purple wires connect to the fuel sender. One wire connects to the full side of the sender and the other wire connects to the empty side. These wires are not polar specific (98). Make sure when connecting both wires that they are oriented correctly when connected to the pins on the connector and also the same position on the fuel sender (full and empty).

B-position is purple (fuel sender) wire
C-position is red (primary pump) wire
D-position is black (common ground) wire
E-position is purple (fuel sender) wire

It appears based on your description of the plug end on the RockAuto fuel pump assembly that you will have to modify the Racetronix external pump harness and that you have some options. Hope this helps with the configuration of the pins on the yellow bulkhead connector.

FYI : with dual pumps Racetronix configures E position for the second pump and moves the ground from both pumps to a negative post on the hat of the metal pump assembly. As a result the Racetronix intank harness connects to the bulkhead connector differently as does the external pump harness because of the change to use two pins for two pumps vs one pin on the connector for the single pump and one pin on the connector for the ground on the pump.

Note that the red primary pump wire connects to one pin on the connector and the blue secondary pump connects to a second pin with the ground from both pumps connecting to a grounding post drilled through the metal hat attached to the metal fuel tank.

See pic below.

@dlandsvZ28 Thanks alot man really appreciate it..... I ended up repinning the wires from the racetronix harness into the rockauto 4 pin connector and since the wire wasn't long enough for the ground that goes to the assembly hat I tapped into the center of the assembly with a tap screw and a connector lol....I then repinned my upgrade harness like I had it originally and All is working plus I now have a gas gauge after 4yrs without lol
