Default Why dual feeds from sump?

I see that most sumped tanks have (2) 1/2" NPT outlets, and a lot of the more serious fuel systems plumb the two outlets with -8 AN line going to a Y block into a -10. Is there any particular reason to use two -8 feeds rather than just using one -10? I don't know the ID of 1/2" NPT x -10 adapters, so does that fitting become a restriction? 1/2" Schedule 40 has an ID of 0.622" and schedule 80 has an ID of 0.546". I would guess that the ID of the adapter fittings would be somewhere in that range, which would make it a bit smaller than the 0.625" ID of -10 line. Would it make sense to just weld one -10 male fitting onto the sump of a tank?

You don't need to use both of the fittings on the sump! As long as you use the right size line for your pump! External pumps arn't good at pulling fuel, that is why they say mount pump close and lower than sump! Weldon pumps say to use -12an in and -10an out! My system with -10feed to Y-block -8 to rails and -8 return! I was told it would support 1200hp! I like the other fitting on the tank caped of so I can unscrew it to empty tank!

Okay, but if the Weldon pump says to use a -12an in, then you definately would need to use the two ports on the sump, since a 1/2" NPT isn't nearly as big as a -12. What I was referring to was systems like this:

That is exactly why there are 2 fittings in the tank. But not nessesary for under about 1000HP. A single -10 feed then -8 to the rails will support 1000+HP. Smaller line will also help keep the pressure up.

Thanks for replying! Does a 1/2" NPT outlet going into a 1/2" NPT to -10 adapter become a restriction over going with a -10 bung on the gas tank? Or is it fine to run a single 1/2" NPT -10 adapter to a -10 line to the fuel pump? That is my concern, I plan on doing -10 to the pump and -8 from the pump to the rails, but I want to see if I can just use one of the outlets on the sump to do this, or if I need to use a Y-block with two -8's coming together to the single -10.

No you are better off using the one 1/2" to -10 fitting. That is why it is built that way.
