Default Using only an inline fuel pump possible

I am working on a conversion and my tank doesnt have any provisions for an in tank pump can I get by with just an inline pump? I had been told no but I figure I am not the first with this question. I searched and didnt find anything exactly like this.
Thanks
Dave

You sure can, most of the high horsepower cars use inline pumps. If you are doing a stockish lower HP setup a single 255 walbro inline should work just fine, just try to keep it lower then the tank (they like to push not pull) and put a filter before and after it.

alright I may try moving the pump down some. I am picking up out of the top of the tank of course the pickup tube is at the bottom of the tank. I have it close to the tank but sounds like if I can lower it some it might help. Currently I dont have enought fuel pressure at teh rails. last night I pulled the vac hose (this is a 5.3 with return system and built in regulator) and it didnt seem to change the pressure. I do have good vaccumn at the port. I will see how much fuel is in the tank I do know it is low.
Thanks
and anymore inputs would be great!

Are you trying to just use a inline pump as your intank pump? If so it want work like that. An inline pump still needs a intank pump to pressurize it. That's how they rate them in conjunction with you intank pump.

Well yes my gas tank doesnt have any provisions for an intank setup so the only thing I really have is the external inline pump...
I am trying to research if I can get something to work in the tank

Where is the fuel pickup ?

If the outlet from the tank is at the bottom, then an in-line should work fine.
If you are drawing from the bottom, then the pickup passup up and out of the top of the tank, you may have issues, although once you manage to get the pump primed and filled with fuel, it should work fine from there.

Most efi pumps dont suck, so will have trouble priming, if gravity cant do it.

If you cant get an in-tank fitted, you could consider using a high volume, low pressure pump, aka a carb install. As far as I know, these do suck, and would work as a suitable lift pump for the efi pump. You can get them easy enough in 100gph or more flow rates which should be more than enough to feed most inline efi pumps.
