Default fuel pump sock?

Can someone describe to me what the "sock" is in relation to the fuel pump, where it goes, what it does, etc.? I will be installing an STS turbo to my '99 C5 Vette, and want to upgrade the fuel system. I just want to get as much info as possible.
Thank you,
Chris

The fuel strainer is made of woven plastic. The functions of the fuel strainer are to filter contaminants and to wick fuel. The left fuel sender assembly has a large L-shaped strainer. The right fuel sender assembly has two strainers. The fuel strainer is self-cleaning and normally requires no maintenance. Fuel stoppage at this point indicates that the fuel tank(s) contains an abnormal amount of sediment or water.
