It is very important that the correctly sized (volume & mciron rating) filter be used in any FI application. Be very careful when you consider substitutions as many of these filters where originaly designed for carb applications. I would also recommend that you avoid the smaller $29 filters as most have a small disc filter, roughly the same size of a quarter, and are at best completely inadequate.
Problems with using the wrong filters can include: very noisey pumps, air in the fuel which can affect system performance
, and possible pump damage.
Other options for fuel filters are Weldon Pump and Hilborn Fuel Injection.

Substitutions that are less expensive and still have adequate volume and are serviceable? I really don't think there are many alternatives. System 1 may have something compareable but I don't think they will be less expensive.
Whatever you do don't skimp here as the prefilter is critcal to system performance and durabilty. You can force fuel through a crappy or dirty outlet filter and while it will be harder on the pump you might get by for a while.
If you have a cell, consider removing any foam that may be in there as its known to come apart and block the filter. At the very least pick up some -10 caps and plugs so you can inspect and clean the filter every so often without making a big mess.
