Problem starting up

Problem starting up hey guys. First off I have a 98 v6 firebird with 16,000 miles on it. My only problem with it right now is that about half the times I start the car up it will rev up nicely to about 2000 and then slow down to idle around 1000. The other half of the times no matter how long I hold the key the car will not rev past 1000 at all. It will just stay there like it is struggling to start up cleanly. All i could think of was mayber the fuel injectors were dirty or something? Also im only gettin about 20 mpg and its the v6!!! Somethin has to be wrong there. Hopefully its related to the other problem. I do live in NY which has the most city driving, but 20 is still crap. Any ideas?
