Fuel pressure regulator I have a 1999 Pontiac LS1 installed in a 1984 Studebaker Avanti 2. It runs excellent under power, but at idle my inline MSD fuel pump starts to cavitate causing the engine to surge and stall. At present I am not running a fuel pressure regulator or a return line. Which inline regulator would be best for this problem? I believe that I need a constant source of fuel through the pump returning to the tank at idle to solve this.
Aeromotive makes an inline regulator that is adjustable. But before you install one you need to check a couple of things.
First, you need to measure the fuel pressure at the rail with a mechanical gauge. For the Gen III engine, the factory calls for a steady 55-60 psi under all conditions (key ON, idle, part and full throttle). What is the flow rate of the inline pump and do you have an intake pump as well? I would guess if you're running just the inline pump, it's not supplying enough fuel. I would also check to make sure the pump has enough voltage.
