Default Octane?

Here's my question. My wife has a '00 Formula WS6. Her mods include, direct flo lid, ported MAF, MAFT version 4.0, ported TB, SLP LT, !cats, and a cut-out. We are looking into buying her a cam. Specs on the cam are 228/232 113 LSA. What is the best octane to run? Would we be safe running 91 octane? Should we run 91 octane with a boost? Or should we buy 100 octane? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm in Phoenix and we also have 91. I'm getting away with a lot more mods than that. Just make sure you are not lean anywhere and you should be ok.

I have 11.1:1 CR and I am basically able to get away with 91 all the time. Durring the summer (now) its a little hot and WOT I get some knock. If I'm going to race I put 1 or 2 gals of 104 octane unleaded to bring it up to 93.

Chris thanks for the reply. The only thing that I was really worried about, is that most of the guys up here running a cam larger than 224 are all running 100 octane all the time and I was not sure if it was really needed or not. I will be sure that when I go to the track during the hotter months to throw in a couple of gallons of the higher stuff.

If anything the larger cam may make the car less octane sensitive since it will probably lower dynamic compression. People are probably running the higher octane because they have "race cars" now .

On 5/27/03 in the Diognostics and tuning section I asked some octane booster questions. The header reads "Has anyone used Toluene to boost octane?" I got some good input and I think its worth your time to read. As of this time it's in the fourth page of the section. You may also call Union 76 racing gas @ 800 345 0076 I got some very good information out of them.

IMHO,
boosters and race gas over time will degrade O2s and Cats.
If the PCM calibration (tuning) is done correctly you can use just pump gas and still get no knock.

I tested several brands of boosters over some months and they not only eat your pocket book, are a hassle to use, but did degrade the O2s.
Boosters are use sly marketing, they claim raising the octane by XX points but that really means decimal POINT so if they say 4 points it really means 0.4 of 1 octane.
Race gas is a pain in the *** to find/buy, costs 4 to 5 bucks a gallon and if too much is added to the tank, it burns slower and you will lose performance.
If used, no more then 4 gallons per full tank with pump gas.

My stroker engine is 11.3:1 and using Ca crapgas and with decent tuning has zero knock and that is still with 28 degrees of timing during PE.
