gas problems

gas problems ok i have a 93 trans am..........when i got it the hole above the gas tank was already cut as if they had messed with the fuek pump.anywho my car keeps dieing at a lil over a quarter some times a lil below......I opened it up when it read 1/4 and died and it had about that much gas in it but wouldnt run......put gas in it and its fine....whats the problem anyone
