Default Fuel level sender problem

Been having issues try to get fuel level gauge to work. It is a programmable autometer cobalt and I tried wiring it directly to the sender wire in the rear under the vehicle (the purple wire). However the gauge still won't work. It goes through the whole setup till the last one and nothing. There is no stock computer in the car either. Is there a way I can check to see if the wire is actually connected to the sender with out pulling the tank? Should there be a specific current I could be looking for coming from the wire? The tank was pulled by a shop and was told it was hooked back up but wanted to check that there were no issues. Not sure how the current is sent through this wire. Is it a constant and what should it read?

Thanks

The stock 99-02 sender is 250-40ohms. Along with the purple you need a ground.

The ground is from the gauge though right? All of the wires are connected and everything goes well untill the final step. Or is there another ground I should be looking for?
