can an A1000 fuel pump be ran without a return line?

Not a good idea.
A pump of that size will heat the fuel very quickly without a return line
and destroy itself in the process.

The A1000 does not have an internal bypass so when deadheaded it will make well over 120psi. This is not good for your vehicle or pump. So in short, don't do it.

The unit is designed for use with a bypass regulator.
