How lean can you run E85 for cruse???

How lean can you run E85 for cruse??? I know the Stoich is around 9.8 for E85, but I have heard of tuners who have tuned non-flex fuel cars for E85 and people have said they lost every little in mpg's. I did the E85 experiment on my turbo truck for 4 tanks of fuel and set it up for 10:1 afr for cruise and went from 14-15 mpgs down to an average of 10.3mpg for the 4 tanks which is about what it should have been with the 30% lose in energy content in it.
My question, is since I never had any knock, no mater what I did, could a person run it like 14-15:1 in cruise and retain the mpg's? Any one tried this?
With EFILive, I can command whatever AFR I want and run full open loop. I would give it a try, but the closest E85 to me now is 60 miles away. Any thoughts? How are these tuners doing it with stock vehicles and not loosing 30%?

When I was testing E85 I ran mine in a pseudo "lean cruise" by running OL just like I do with regular gas and with the same exact lambda ratios at cruise (16.0 with gas). As long as it isn't lean popping or breaking up it should be fine. Running like that won't let you make up anywhere near the ~30% loss you see with E85 though. Anybody who says they are not losing ~30% of the mileage are full of it.
