Rear end whining

Rear end whining From what i can tell, my rear end is whining, pitch frequency gets higher the faster i go. You can hear it at a crawl, and up to about 40 or 45, then road noise mixes in, and cant hear it really any more, but im sure its still there. What should i be looking at? I will probably take it somewhere, but id like to know a little going in. Its a stock rear end on my 02 SS. It may be coincidence, but the last time i brought it in, i had them inspect it cause of some clunking, and 1 trip to work later, and its whining.
My rear ran low on fluid causing my axle bearings to go bad, but it is more of a grinding noise rather than whining. Also got quoted $1200 bucks to replace them. Still grinding!

Thanks Bob, thats what a few of my neighbors said. I could touch fluid with my pinky, but i had to bend it down. I had it back in a second time to that shop, and they said that was the correct level. The pumpkin isn't leaking, so the seal is good. How low is too low? Everything i read says the fluid should just start to drip. I guess it could be due to the car being unlevel, i used floor jacks to get under the car...
