Default 3.73's vs 4.10s in a 10 bolt, which will break first?

I am thinking about putting gears in my rear end, I have a M6 and never track it but do a bit of stoplight racing. I have 555r's and make 420hp so I do know that I am on borrowed time. Even so I'd still like to waste some money and put gears in my 10 bolt. I'd like to stick some 4:10s in for that quick acceleration but I am wondering if 3.73's would be stronger, er less weak. I konw that everything inside the rear end is weak but if there is a big difference in stregnth between 3.73 and 4;10s I might just go with 3.73's and sacrifice a bit of accel for some strength. Any input guys?

The gears themselves shouldn't be any weaker either way you go.

But the 4.10's will put more stress on the shafts/housing than the 3.73's - not sure if you guys are having problems with housings? ie twisting tubes, bending, etc....

Waste it on a 9"...

Might as well burn it if you're putting money into a 10 bolt..

yeah, but at this point I cant stand to be flat broke and I dont have a 3k dollar credit card to finance it. If it breaks I have another 10 bolt to go in that I got for $100 bucks.

Why don't you get a 9" out of something else and adapt it for your rig? ie out of the wrecking yard. 3.73's are popular and I bet you can get a complete rear axle for under $200....

you cant really adapt a 9 inch for a 98+ camaro without some major fab work. All i have is a 110volt welder so i doubt i'd be able to weld good enough. I wish someone would come up with a 1000-1500 solution for the rear ends in these cars, they'd be freakin rich.

Talk to Currie Enterprises. I know they do a F body 9" for 82-92 for $1500 - includes torque arm and shafts. I bet they make a bracket kit as well. I wouldn't even attempt to weld them on with a 110v welder, though...

But that's new... A used housing from the yard at about the width you need and with your own brackets to install... I bet one can be done for well under $1k, closer to $500... Worst case you could always cut your brackets off and reuse them.

EDIT: or even a 8.8 out of an Explorer/Ranger...?

The thing that sucks is the Currie doesn't accept the ABS which is what is limiting my decision making. I would love to mess with a 8.8 and do some fab work, just don't have the tools/equipment and time.

4.10s are stronger because of the contact area.

I broke 5 sets of 4.10's in my car, installed a set of 3.90's and haven't broke them again. The pinion gear is larger on a 3.90 gear which adds additional strength due to increased tooth contact. Better than 3.73's or 4.10's.

Opposite, 4.10s have less material, count the teeth

Sounds like I am going to go with 3.90's, Can you point me in the direction where to get them? I think 3.90's will be the best of both worlds, i thought 4:10s were a bit high and 3:73's were a bit low. I still like doing 80mph cruising on the freeway, but with stock gears i feel like im forced to or else i lugs the crap out of the car.

BTW what else do you have done to your rear end?

i would go with tick, or speed inc imo. motive gears, and you will prolly want to invest in a posi, and a master rebuild kit. and at that point u have spent enough to buy a used 12 bolt off the part section

quite frankly i like 3.73's and you can still keep your highway mileage if you travel long distances.

The pinion gear is on a 3.90 is larger than a 3.73 and has more tooth contact?

The key point has been highlighted. BTW, I'm running 400 h.p. on a 10 bolt with 3.42 Strange gears for now.
