Stupid Question

Can some one tell me how to tell the difference between a 7 5/8 rear and a 8.5 rear just by looking at the outside of the diff?

They never built an 8.5 to fit our cars (rules out almost all bolt in axles...unless someone converted it).

Yeah I know they didn't have them in the F-bodies, which would have been much better than the 7 5/8. It is just something that I was trying to find out.

There are several lists floating around the car mags that tell what cars and what years they were available (2nd gen F-bodies should have them) as well as many others. Alot of mid 70's cars had the 10 bolt. You may want to check richmond gear's website, I think they have a page that has pictures to help identify a rear end....or they did (may be worth a look).
