Default Replacing Dana S60 Studs

Ok, short story... All 5 lugs and studs came off one of my rear wheels about 3 months after I installed a Dana S60.

The car is in the shop 200 miles away from me since my dad was driving it at the time...I ordered ARP screw in studs from Summit since I heard they were stronger from several sources and was told these would fit in the Dana fine.

The shop calls today to say that the studs are "different". I don't know if that meant they wouldnt fit or that they looked different or what...they didn't attempt to put any in yet because they are removing the axle in order to install them but are having trouble with a bearing.

Is it even necessary to need to remove the axle to install these?? I don't have the car around so I have nothing to look at, but if there is a guide anywhere or any sort of instruction how-to on installing these suckers into a Dana can someone post it up? I searched but found nothing relevant. Thanks

I'd have to see a picture of the axle flanges - if they are like my Strange 12-bolt axles, there are two different sets of holes - one for the 12mm (stock) hardware and one set drilled and tapped for 1/2 studs. Both are threaded holes on mine, so screw in studs are required.

I actually drilled a hole in the backing plates on mine to be able to access them without removing the axles. I have no ABS or TCS (didn't retain it from my 10-bolt), so there's nothing else physically blocking me from unscrewing the studs through the backing plate one at a time.

That's a great idea man. I'm glad I just read this, I'm getting ready to install the axles on my 9" and it also has 1/2" screw-in studs.

Thanks! (I ordered screw in studs, so I'm almost positive they are the right part) I'll call them and see if they want to drill holes into the plates to make it easier...its not like I have a warranty on the axle anyway...I believe I have 1/2" studs, or at least thats what the folks at Strange told me on the phone yesterday...as well as the guys at the shop. I have both ABS and TCS... Would that reluctor ring be in the way of the studs unscrewing?

Its really annoying to have a broken car hundreds of miles away where you can't see it...

you will have to remove the reluctor ring and most likely the bearing/brakes to remove the screw in studs... good luck!

Yep...chances are that the reluctor rings will end up blocking the bolt, which makes me glad I chose not to deal with them. Either way, removing the axles/reluctor rings should be no big deal for a competent mechanic.

My Strange 12-bolt came with the factory sized 12mm screw-in studs - they will be getting replaced with 1/2" pieces as soon as I get the time. The last thing I want is a broken stud because the damn things weren't big enough from the get-go.

Yeeeep, reluctor ring in the way the guy said. They're already spotting my bill at about $350 already though to remove the axle and replace the studs... but that's "INCLUDING GEAR OIL" the guy said. greaaat.
