gear pattern check please
Having the ovals on opposite ends while still maintaining the good oval shape is still going to be acceptable assuming the ovals are still well defined. Chances are if you tried to center up the ovals by changing the pinion shims, you would lose the oval definition and tooth coverage like what is desirable.
I have had setups that looked ho hum with .022" shim and then when I went to .024" shim the oval was very well definied and usually in the center. A few thousanths can make a huge difference.
As others mentioned, this part of the pattern is not critical and many times it cannot be fixed.

Set pinion depth, ok wear pattern looks good (centered on the tooth), then backlash. 2 seperate adjustments. Backlash is adjusted by moving the ring gear either left or right, causing the pinion to either be deeper into the root of the ring or out more.
