Default Which driveshaft?

Are all LS1's supposed to have an aluminum driveshaft or do they come with both? I have a 99 that the DS had to be replaced after I bought it and just recently the weights came off so I pulled it to have it rebalanced and noticed that it is a steel unit. Any help appriciated.

Did a little more seaching and found that it is a toss up of what driveshaft you get so I guess I should be happy that I now have a steel DS

I believe those with the 2.73 gears came equipped with a steel driveshaft, whereas LS1s with 3.23s had a lighter, aluminum driveshaft.

I don't think there is a rhyme or reason to who has steel or aluminum ds because I have 3.23's with a steel ds and while I was searching alot of other people with 3.23's 3.42's M6 A4 have steel DS's and some with 2.73's have aluminum.

I'm really on the fence about which is better; The steel driveshafts are stronger than the aluminum, however, they weigh *significantly more* than than the aluminum driveshafts do.
When swapping mine, I got to hold both. I realized just how much lighter the aluminum shaft really was.
