running a 9inch. what locker/diff should i run?
i have a 01 trans am with a lq4 m6 package and i am putting a ford 9'' in it this winter. right now i have a center section with a spooled 33 spline unit. i do not want to run the spool due to this being a daily driver in the summer and i do still like to accel thru turns and such once in a while and do get caught in the rain on occasions. i'm also told the spool will be really hard on my street tires being a 315/35/17 series it will chew them up a lot.
so i'm thinking about selling the spool and going 35 spline to get a setup with more options for lockers and such.
what are available for lockers on the 33 spline anyways?
and what setup would you guys recommend to run in my car?

I'd keep the spool instead of putting a locker in since you've got a 6 speed. The only time the locker will unlock is when you're turning with the clutch depressed. Otherwise it stays locked any time you've got the clutch out and your foot on the gas, just like a spool. This is coming from a guy with a detroit locker & 6 speed, only reason I run one is I got my 9" used for a good deal. If I ever change ring/pinion again I'm pulling the locker out and a spool is going in.

you start looking at 35 spline axles, and your first question should be do you really need 35 spline axles. the $$ to need ratio goes to ****. i have 31 spline axles and its handled multiple launches at 6k on stickies. i may upgrade later to 33 spline when i drop the 408 in it. my advice is to stick with the 33 spline unit with the spool. just try your damnest not to get caught in the rain.

one of my instructors has a 76 Mavrick with a blown 302 (read 8-71) makes over 500 horse at the wheels and his 31 spline stuff holds good with 33X18X15 (i think) slicks. so im not worried. if i break it, ill upgrade.
oh, i have a Strange steel spool.

I've once drove sixty miles in the rain with a Camaro with a spool and M/T drag radials. At first I slowed a little on the twisty curves on a highway not knowing what to expect, but I found no problems at all. I just stayed at a steady fifty miles an hour. Bob

The Wavetrac is an option that allows you to use 35 spline axles. Here is a link to info about it. http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com...html?item=2227 Bob
Just my opinion.

its not a huge difference in price, but i already had 31 splines in mine when i got it, so i didnt feel like changing it. i wouldnt upgrade untill you absoutely need it. 31 spline axles will hold as much power as a you can throw at it without going into the XXXX digits on HP and TQ. i plan to throw 800-900 hp thru my 31 spline stuff.

I have a 9" with 35 spline axles and a Detroit Soft Locker and I love it. Once you learn how to drive it they are not that bad. You learn fast not to turn slow corners with the clutch in. It soulds like your driveshaft is going to fall out. But I know its never going to break that for sure !

6 speed id go spool its not as bad as you think just when you park or turn sharp... id only use a locker for an auto. as for posi's well the tru trak has its limits i know 2 people who have broke them with mild head/cam cars on drag radials. the new wavetrac is supposed to hold more power but they are very pricy.
