Default Gear swap help please!!

Ok, I put a set of summit 3.73 gears in my 10 bolt. I changed the carrier bearings, pinion bearings, set backlash to .009 and ran an acceptable pattern. After I put the rear back together and put wheels on it I rocked the wheel back and forth and noticed that it seemed to have an awful lot of play and that .009 backlash seemed a bit excessive. I attributed the clunk from rocking the tire to the diff not having any gear lube in it. Well I got the car on the road and the gears are whisper quiet not making any noise under any circumstances EXCEPT when I don't give it enough go pedal coming out of the clutch and the clutch bucks a little bit I can hear it clunk back there. Will thicker gear oil help with the clunk at all or am I screwed?

Don't worry .007-.010 is where you want to be, and once you add gear oil it takes up a couple thousandths.

Your backlash is fine. The clunk is probably from taking up the slack in the spider gears, not the ring/pinion.

You dont turn the wheels to feel backlash. You are involving way more parts in that equation, all of which have their own slack.

thanks for the help, I am going to drop the diff fluid here in a week or so to change it out with 85-140 and while I have the cover off I am going to recheck the backlash with a little better dial indicator just to verify. I couldn't justify spending the big bucks on a starrett when harbor freight had those babies on sale for 11.99 Should be close but for 12 bucks I doubt it is the most accurate thing on the planet
