Default 9 inch bearing question

Might be a stupid question but does the backing plates hold the axles in?
And what are the small sleeves for that come with the bearings?
Here is a picture of the bearings and the sleeves in question.

And just some more pics of the install

Dude, that small ring, AKA Wedding ring has to pressed on with a super duper press. Your caliper plates will hold the axles in with 4 bolts.

YEP

And what are the small sleeves for that come with the bearings?
wedding ring-- holds the bearing in place

install the backing plates first( be sure and install the correct one on correct side)
then bearing, then wedding ring ( look at the ring I think one side is tapered a little to ade with install
I cool the axle in the freezer over nite and the wedding ring in hot water for a bit , both of which helps make the install easyer, you may like to install lugs in the axle before installing backing plate

"...RIGHT SIDE IS LONGER AXEL ON 9" FOR FBODY

The PASSENGER (RIGHT) side axle is the LONGER axle, driver side being the shorter axle. You can tell which side will be the longer axle by looking at the offset of the center section. Bob

no need to to tear the rear back apart, only need to pull the axels to install the rings
