Default Rear rebuild time

Friends,

My original rear has 172K miles on it and the carrier bearings are freekin deafening. I’ve already done axel bearings and it helped only slightly.

While I really want to go with a Midwest Fab9 rearend, I just can’t afford it now or in the foreseeable future.

I’m gonna do a basic rebuild of the unit in the car. My bud Little Joey can set up the gears for me.

Here’s what I have planned, please correct and/or guide me:

The car has three channel ABS.
The rear has a good posi but 2.73 gears (YUCK). I plan to move to 3.42.
I’d LIKE to install a c-clip eliminator.

Questions:

-Am I correct that with a 2.73 rear, I have a 2 series carrier?
-I’m looking at Richmond gear set, 49-0005-1. Richmond lists their full installation kit for this gear set (83-1044-M) only to 1998? Will this installation set work on my 1999 car?
-Does anybody make a c-clip eliminator that bolts in without machining?

Thanks!

yes,you have a 2 series carrier.
the 49-0005-1 is a 3.42:1 gearset for a 2 series carrier.
their catalog needs an update since it only shows the kit for up to 98,99-02 can also use that kit except for some 01/02 that use a different pinion seal. Everything else is compatable.98s' used an Auburn carrier,99-02 used a Torsen carrier which has no effect on the use of those kits.
you will need to get your speedo recalibrated in the computor.

Thanks pal. I'm about to send off my spare PCM to PCMForLess so it's at the ready to swap in after I do the rear.

Any ideas on c-clip eliminators?

Yes, make sure you get a thick gear. I would stear away from the Richmond though as they tend to make quite a bit of gear noise. We do have Motive Performance Gears in stock as well as the Installation Kit. Stay away from eliminators on a street car. They will leak for sure.
