Pretty sure you got it backwards...autos came with steel, and m6 came with aluminum.

But the break you have is not of that issue, you have a issue where it was caused at one end or the other, and the rip was part of whatever broke at the front.

Was a joint changed recently or something played with at the slip yoke ?
Yes. My tranny was rebuilt 2 weeks ago. But that shaft, yoke and u-joints were 4 years old when I had it replaced when my aluminum factory shaft broke. He just put them back in after the tranny rebuild. This is the 3rd time he has rebuilt my tranny in 8 years.

My original shaft that came with my car from the factory was aluminum. It broke back in 2006 doing about 10mph through a parking lot under no acceleration.

Clearly a shiny aluminum shaft.

That aluminum shaft looks like it broke right where it's closest to your exhaust... hmmmm.

Automatics with 2.73 gears came with steel driveshafts.
Automatics with 3.23's came with aluminum driveshafts.
All manual trans cars came with 3.42's and aluminum driveshafts.

So they changed the joints just before that failure ? the issue was at the slip end, if you can find that end it'll help

No, he used the same joints when he put it back in. He just dropped the drive shaft to take the tranny out to rebuild it....then he put the drive shaft back in.

I'll try to find it when I get home on Sunday, it should be there.

But he did say that the two u-joint caps in the front at the yoke that go into the drive shaft mounts....were gone. The two caps were gone, the u-joint was still there on the yoke. Maybe the bearings in one of those caps seized and broke the drive shaft mount.......????

Oh, cool. Now I got it. My car came with 3.23's.

When my factory aluminum one broke back in 2006, the race shop that I got the used steel shaft from told me that it came out of an M6 car and that all M6 cars came with stell ones.......I guess even speed shops are clueless about the cars they work on....lol

Well it could've been a steel shaft from a factory manual car, all LT1 cars had steel shafts, aluminum shafts didn't start until 98 with the LS1 cars.

Well, this is exactly what happened to me this weekend on a dyno.

The thing that really drew me to this thread was the 80 mph part. Reason being is because at 80mph and above on the way to the dyno my car made a hell of alot of vibration. It also had a poly trans mount on it and that may have been part of the problem.

I got it on the dyno and BAM tail housing cracks wide open and she is puking all over the floor.

Im just asking what in particular do i need to replace in order to keep this from happening again?

do i need a new drive shaft? u joints or what? I'm definitely ditching the F***ing poly trans mount for sure.

I have an A4. I broke my stock aluminum one in 2006 sometime. Had a steel one put in to replace it.

I got lucky for sure. We'll see how the next few days go. Hopefully no leaks.

I know...get a real torque arm. Getting an adjustable one with crossmember mount.
So you have broken 2 driveshafts, you stick another stock one back in there, yet you think the torque arm is the problem?

This is correct. All SS autos had 3.23s, therefor all SS autos have aluminum driveshafts.

No. The torque arm DID NOT cause my drive shaft to break while cruising at 80mph. The drive shaft just decided to break, it sheared off clean as a whistle.

I was just making a statement that I SHOULD get a better torque arm to go along with all of my other mods.

Imagine if a stock torque arm could cause a steel drive shaft to break while cruising at a steady 80mph........

Exactly....I've learned that GM has no clue what they're saying, people here have no clue, and dealership info is completely flawed.

Every manual car I've ever seen had a steel shaft. I've never seen one with an aluminum.

Aluminum on my M6. Most M6's I've seen have aluminum...who knows though. They probably just used whatever they had laying around lol

Im sure it was more common to see on m6 and 3:23 autos as when those cars were ordered the dealer was selecting performance drive line codes and many so happened to select the aluminum drive shaft rpo its been that way since the 80's
