Default To spool or not to spool?

MY detroit true-crap took a dump in my Moser 9". I go cruising with my car on nice days and try to get to the drag strip every once in a while. Would it be a bad idea to go with a spool and 4.56 gears and still be able to take the twisties on back country roads?

edit: MY 9" is a 3ch with 3.75 gear. I'm rockin the T-56 also.

So what's a good limited slip out there that can take some abuse? Apparently the true-trac can't .

True, but your wallet will also take some abuse when going this route lol.

I'm also considering going full spool with my Fab'd 9" later this year, and wouldn't mind hearing from any other members that have gone with this choice for a street/strip car.

If you spend a lot of time driving inner city streets, then I wouldn't go with a spool. If your driving consist of a lot of rural and highway driving, then you're a good candidate for a spool. Every person has a different tolerance of what they will put up with, so it is hard to tell someone to go ahead and run a spool. I had a customer at the old shop with a spool in a Caddy CTS-V, and he lives by Indianapolis and doesn't mind it at all. Many people like a spool a lot better than a locker. Bob

I'm one that got rid of a detroit locker in favor of a spool. Waaaaay mo betta with a 6 speed car! Only thing you notice with the spool is the steering wheel requires more and more effort as you turn it towards full lock. With the locker I was tearing up my trans synchros and the car bucked and jumped all over the place.....never again!

How was the differential causing you to tear up syncros?

The driveline with a locker will cause the driveshaft to be able to rock back and forth about 1/2 a turn. This can play havoc with the transmission at part throttle. Bob

^^^Yep. A locker is set up by design with a lot of slop for it to operate correctly. When my car was on the ground in neutral I could rotate the drive shaft almost 45 degrees back and forth. This slop caused intermittent grinding during normal driving/shifting. I was shocked how much smoother my car shifted both during normal driving and WOT after installing the spool.

Thats very understandable. I would have to believe driving style would have to have something to do with it.

We have a lot of people ask us about spools daily, if you want to maintain a car you can have a little fun going on and coming off on ramps a spool is not for you and neither is a Locker especially like mentioned with a M6.

We have actually had real good luck with the Truetrac and even the Billet Clutch Posi we offer. All though everything has a limit and we like to help choose what is the best route to go based off the customers needs.

I'm not saying I'm just saying there might be a new alternative out there this year to handle some abuse and not break the piggy bank..

I'm running a spool at this time. It does take a little getting use to. I went spool because of budget. I will look into getting a wavetrac in the future.

Interesting....... staying tuned.

Yeah I have the true-crap in mine now that came from Moser when I ordered the rear. I want to go with something with similar characteristics, but a bit stronger. Also, won't kill my wallet like the wavetrack will.

I made the swap after my True-Trac broke. It is deff harder to drive on inner city streets but I have found that if you run regular street tires it makes it worse. However if you run a Drag radial style tire like a Mickey it lessens the chirp on sharp corners. I attribute this to the softer sidewall. I read up on this subject before I made the switch and found guys talking about it so i tried it and the MTs worked much better.

I would use a spool in a drag car only. I just sold my spool and bought a wavetrac. After selling my entire center section and purchasing a new center section with a wave trac already installed, I spent about 1100-1200 dollars. It's worth it.
