checking backlash, which way to move ring gear??
any help is appreciated
let's say you're trying to measure .008" backlash on a 7.625 ring gear, that equates to only 1/8 of a degree,a very small amount of movement.
if your pinion preload is 10-30 in.lbs, that should be enough to keep the pinion from rotating while your watching the indicator.
or somehow hold/keep the pinion from rotating(absolutely no movement) and then watch the indicator while you're moving the ring gear back & forth.
check in a couple places to verify no runout.
