Default am i getting ripped off?

Diff blew up recently, took it to a shop for a rebuild. It's just a standard 10 bolt with 4.10 gears.

They want 1500 for a complete rebuild with a 1 year warranty? Is it just me or is this price insane? I can get a used 10 bolt for a few hundred bucks.

Probably a bit high, but it's in the ball park of what I'd expect to pay to have a blown up 10-bolt rebuild. That's why most people look for a cheaper way to put in an upgraded rear end (like one from a junk yard that is modified to fit) or they buy an upgraded unit (12-bolt, 9 inch, or Dana 60) since it isn't that much more, especially since the ten bolt will break again.

This belongs in the Gears & Axles section BTW. I'd move it myself, but don't have the privileges in this section.

If they are doing a complete rearend rebuild that sounds about right. Labor + parts add up quickly when rebuilding a rearend, transmission, or engine.

I already knew the answer when i saw the title, Yes. You would be better off saving the extra cash and get a fab9. any shop is going to eat you alive in the cost of labor. now getting technically ripped off, no the cost of labor+parts+warranty sounds about right, but for a stock 10bolt you would be better off paying a few hundred yourself and getting a new gearset, if thats all that blew up. remember everything today is expensive as **** if you have someone else do it....

they're telling me it needs a complete rebuild (ring, pinion, housing, etc etc).

of course that's what they say.

what do you guys think i should do? i dont want to spend 2k (rather, i dont have 2k to spend, lol) on a 9/12bolt.

should i go to another shop, or just get a used 10 bolt for a few hundred and put it in myself?

anyone have a writeup on doing a standard diff swap?

The cheapest route to go would be to pull a rear from the junk yard, or to order a new gearset& cover( that is as long as your actual housing/axle tubes are not cracked) if you do not know how to rebuild a rear, some shops you go to will do it for you(but most wont unless THEY provide the parts)

i have a writeup on how to rebuild one, but i have never done it before. I'll have to ask the shop whats up with the axles/housing.

im also not seeing much in the classifieds on here sadly.

Yeah I would have to go with a junkyard rearend. I would have to take a freakin loan out to spend $1500 on a 10 bolt.

Back in the day, I sold my used 10-bolt (fully functional) for around $200 or so. If you don't have the money to spend, you'll just have to wait for something to pop up, or go find one in a junkyard and hope for the best.

You'll just want to make sure you get one that has the same ABS/TCS setup as your car - if your car doesn't have traction control, you'll want a 3 channel (sensor on the pumpkin). If it has traction control, you'll want a 4 channel (one sensor at each wheel).

I'd source all the parts used and then A. pay them for labor only, or B. buy a press and a few tools and do it yourself.

well picked up a used 4channel 10 bolt today with 3.23's for $240.

got a set of 3.73's (used, GM) for $75, drove down to the shop and dropped all that **** off, they're going to install everything (and pack new gears) for $450, which isnt that bad, considering i get my old axle housing, diff, axles and 3.23's out of the new axle back. i can probably sell all that for $200.

then, had this shipped to the shop:http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...tallation-kit/

Overall, pretty successful day, considering I drove all over west and east LA picking up all these parts, and delivered them to the shop in 2 hours on my lunch break.

so, everything should be done by tuesday.

Ok, well $240 for the whole axle (with calipers, rotors, and gears), then $75 for another gear set is a good price.

The big money part here is the gear install kit ($80) and then $450 for the labor on swapping the diffs and swapping the gears.

so overall i spent $315 on parts, and 530 on labor.

minus maybe, $200, for what i can sell the left over parts for, i'm out about $645 bucks. that's a hell of a lot cheaper then a $1500 rebuild.

left over parts: two calipers, two rotors, 3.23 gear set, two axles, 1 axle/diff housing with wheel hubs
