Backlash specs?

Backlash specs? Does anyone have the proper backlash and pinion depth specs for 3.42 gears? I have heard confliciting numbers from different sources. Bottom line is my GM 3.42s are making noise and we're going to adjust them tomorrow and I want to get them right this time.

The ring and pinion backlash specification is 0.005 – 0.009 inch but I recently measured the backlash of my 3.42 gears and the backlash was only 0.003 inch! These were the production gears at 23,000 miles. Pinion depth varies with different gear sets.
