Rear End Questions
Im saving up for a new rear end the TA has 190K miles on it. So i see a 12 bolt and a 9 inch. What are the differences between the two. and which one is better for a mostly DD. In the future the car will have a 408 in it and probably see around 450-550 HP.

12 bolt is a early GM muscle car design and referred to by the number of ring gear bolts used. ring gear is 8.875" diameter.
9 inch is a early oem Ford design that was used in several of the Ford cars, trucks, and vans. the 9 inch is referred to by its ring gear diameter... 9.00 inches.
the 9 inch ford design rearend is by far the most popular aftermarket rearend in all vehicles used for racing, but the 12 bolt is a good rearend in some applications as well. Due to the f-body torque arm bolting to the cast center of the 12 bolt rearends it is prone for case flex and will result in noise after the rerarend is installed and ran hard... and it can take as little as one hard launch to make it noisy.
the nine inch rear is a bit stronger by design and can be made lighter as well, and there are more choices for case, diff unit, and gear options.
MWC manufactures one of the most popular rearends for the f-body car and is a unbeatable deal as it includes an adjustable torque arm and crossmember for your application. It is the most true bolt-in nine inch rearend you can buy, can be made as light as the stock rearend, has no clearance issues or extra brackets/retainers missing that you won't get told about, and is the best value on the market for a rearend.
Feel free to call, pm, or email if you have any questions. We shoot it straight with our customers... no extra sales bs and we explain everything about our rearend as well as the others on the market at the same time. MWC also proudly offers all components from Strange Engineering and Moser at the lowest prices guaranteed.

not meaning to hijack the thread but kinda silly to start one asking the same question.
im looking for a 9" and will have similar driving habits as the OP, ie street driving. My car has 571 @ the wheels now, but ultimate goal of 750rwhp, street car that sees the track sometimes. (havent been yet because of the rear). Whats a basic setup, bolts straight up no fabbing or n ething like that and keeps the ABS. what options would you be looking at and a price range? Hopefully this helps the OP too

Our base package 9" rearend is 2700.00 shipped and will get you down the road, but we offer the most options on a true bolt-in 9 inch rearend of any manufacturer. 3 or 4ch abs/tcs can be installed as well as reusing your factrory brakes, and we do offer a fully assembled rearend ready to bolt into your car.
The package consists of the lightest fabricated housing with all standard features, complete Strange nodular center section, 31 or 35 spline axles, and a chromemoly double adjustable torque arm with applicable crossmember. The rearend housing features laser cut housing bracketry with the 4 hole LCA relocators built in. This bracketry setup is a standard feature on all rearends, as is a drainplug, stock type anti-sway brackets installed and brake line clips. 98-02 rearends even have brake hose mounts and e-brake cable mount installed. All rearend packages also include a chassis-to-rearend brake hose adapter bracket to mount the brake hose where it originally bolted to the factory housing. These are all standard features included at no extra cost. The other rearends on the market have some of these features as options for extra cost, and some of the little things aren't even offered. These little things are a huge issue when it comes down to making a rearend a true "bolt-in". Combine all this with the overall cost of the kit compared to making the other rearends equipped with a comparable torque arm, and then not have all the features, and you have the best value for a rearend you can get.
Feel free to pm, email, or call us and we can walk you through everything about a rearend and the options. We will get whats best for you and your budget- and right the first time.
