New LSD
Thanks in advance!!
Here is why. The new carrier will NEVER be exactly like the one you removed. The distance from one bearing to the other will affect the carrier preload, the distance between the bearings and the flange the ring gear mounts on changes the backlash or how much "play" is in the gearset. Changing the position of the ring gear causes the pinion to contact the ring gear in the wrong place. When it's right the contact area is large and centered.
There are a lot of threads here on how to set the preload and what you should have done before you removed the original carrier to insure the new one goes back in the same place. You'll need a dial indicator and a base to hold it to the rear end to measure the backlash, but you removed the carrier so that measurement is lost. So now you need to go from the gear contact pattern. You can find pictures and how to do it in a service manual.
If this is your first time adjusting a rear end you may be better off going to a professional shop that specializes in rear ends and have them take a look.
