arc welding rear?
arc welding rear? Hey guys, been curious about this for awhile. Has anyone used an arc welder for relos or that nifty axle tube brace or do you have to MIG them? I only have arc and have been avoiding welding because it would seem to be too hot.

If you use a stick welder I would use 6011 rod, which gives good penetration and is an all position rod. Bob

Thanks guys and for the suggestion on the 6011, been meaning to pick some up. Not sure if I have the stones/skills as I have, ehem, taught myself how to weld. . .but I had previously been under the impression the stick welding the rear is not a good idea. Thanks.
Stick welding is a hot weld. Just don't over do it. I'm no pro welder, but I've used an arc welder for years and found that it will definitely burn a hole right through less than 1/4 inch steel, and can also weaken some steel if you weld too long in one spot. I would think that the axle tubes are plenty thick to use an ARC welder on, but if you're leaving any bearings in near your weld points, I would either take them out or use a lighter welder.
6011 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 welding rods are available, and work better for thinner metal. 1/8 is probably what I would use on a rear-end, and remember to keep the rod dry. We use to use an old refrigerator with a light bulb mounted in it to keep the rod warm and dry. Bob
